Southport's Atkinson Centre

On Wednesday afternoon I arranged for members of the Southport Area Committee to have a site visit to the Atkinson Centre, formerly know as The Arts Centre.

The local press have carried stories on the refurbishment of the centre with numerous photographs.

I took a few of my own photos which follow.

All who attended were impressed by the transformation of this once dilapidated building. When it opens in May it will act as a regional hub for the arts and it will be something that Southport residents will be proud of.

I may post further details when I can find an electronic version of the reports I have received in the past.

In the 1980,s I was a Lib-dem Councillor for Meols Ward when I suffered a heart attack. This was due to trying to balance work AND being a n unpaid Councillor. We were only paid expenses at that time. I am appalled by the actions of the Labour Councillors on the so called Cabinet. How much did they claim in expenses for this latest fiasco? Get this published in the Press.

Odd isn't it that there is a broadly based citizens camapign about the Library in Birkdale with over 4000 people supporting them and we have heard not a peep from the CVS. Community Development is something done with local people not visited upon them. Like the Bootle led Sefton council this has the stench of the 'Governor General' mentality about it. If the Council want community bids then they should ask for them -preferably from the community.

A sad state of affairs indeed. Is it really the case that a Council puts political place-men or women on a school governing body rather than a person who is clearly dedicated to the school? Seemingly it is but then again it is Bootle Labour pulling the strings so whilst it is sad it is no great surprise. What do they know or care about Southport or anywhere outside of Bootle?

Labour really have got themselves in a muddle over these Library closures. I wonder if their plan is to let the consultation go along and then for them to claim that they have saved our libraries from closure at the last gasp? What else can be their plan as they can only get about 1% of the savings they need to make by closing 7 libraries!

Sefton Council, the New Barbarians. Libraries are not a luxury, they are a necessity. Birkdale Library in particular is the only one with disabled Parking facilities.

Labour are after closing the library in Aintree Village as well - save us from socialism!

The Bootle control freaks are running the show here in Sefton. But even on Maghull Town Council Labour talk about things being transparent whilst ducking and diving to control the agenda and press coverage.
